My hair loss journey started in February 2003 after noticing a wider parting, very small patches and my pony tail getting thinner. In August 2004 I had my first scalp biopsy and in 2005 a dermatologist discussed the possibility of me having a hair transplant which I refused as I was reluctant to lose hair from the occiput and have it moved to the crown in case my hair loss worsened - which it did.
I was advised to take multi-vitamins and was prescribed steroids and scalp lotions; none of which made the slightest difference and I refused to wear the wig given to me by Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital as it resembled something someone would wear at Halloween. I paid a small fortune to attend private hair clinics including at Harley Street and the only difference I saw was a decline in my bank account.
I loved my hair and was a regular at the hairdressers. It was my identity and I felt that I was losing my confidence and myself over the years. My hair loss was affecting my mental health and I became a shadow of my former self. When Nanogen stopped working on camouflaging my bald spots, I purchased the first of many wigs. I spent thousands of pounds over the years purchasing wigs with a fringe but felt so self-conscious wearing them. I wanted my own hair back. I looked forward to Winter where I could hide my wig under a hat when travelling on public transport. I looked at other women wearing wigs and wished for their ‘don’t care’ attitude. I wore head scarves to wash the car, answer the door and clear the weeds in the front garden. I spent so many nights crying and knew something had to change and it did when I found Amber Jean during one of my many internet searches.

I booked an appointment and had a consultation at the shop. Katie listened to my journey and looked through some photos I had brought with me of when I had hair. I was able to try on lots of different wigs without feeling rushed and I realised that this was the first wig shop that wasn’t in it for the money - they understood. And now I have Katie (the wig); my first without a fringe. Staff members are only at the end of an email to answer questions about styling or products and no question is a silly question.
I have come a long way over the past two decades and wigs have changed so much over the years too. My confidence has grown since purchasing my wig from Amber Jean. I only wish I had found this shop sooner. Of course wearing my wig will never be the same as when I had my own full head of hair but it’s a super close second, and that’s good enough for me.
